1. General information
Goals and meaning of the subject in the degree program
The goals of this subject are to provide the student with the fundamental theoretical knowledge of the process of teaching and learning English in the context of Early Childhood Education of teaching and learning English in the context of Early Childhood Education, as well as to enable them.
In addition, this subject aims to contribute to the acquisition of the following Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations Agenda 2030:
Goal 4: Quality Education
Goal 5: Gender Equality.
Goal 10: Reduction of Inequalities
Recommendations for taking the subject
A level of English language of B1+ of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) may be required to enroll in this subject European Framework of Reference for Languages.
2. Learning results
The student, in order to pass this subject, must demonstrate the following results:
1. Understands and knows how to explain the basic theoretical principles of first and second language teaching and learning, particularly in early childhood.
2. Knows and interprets the theoretical foundations of the approaches and methods for the teaching of English as a foreign language at the Early Childhood stage.
3. Is able to establish an effective connection between teaching theory and practice and to critically interpret the context in which second language teaching and learning takes place.
4. Critically selects and evaluates educational materials, identifies the theoretical principles that inspire them and uses them appropriately.
5. Knows the characteristics of classroom interaction and the elements that affect the acquisition of a second language at an early age.
3. Syllabus
The program of the course includes:
- Theoretical foundations of mother tongue and foreign language acquisition and learning.
- Theoretical perspectives and practical applications for the teaching of English as a foreign language to students of Early Childhood Education.
- Language and interaction in the English classroom in Early Childhood Education.
- Classroom analysis, materials and activities for teaching English in Early Childhood Education.
4. Academic activities
Students will attend the teacher's presentations followed by a question and answer session to to obtain the necessary feedback. Students will be provided with a selection of materials and texts from the recommended bibliography , which they will have to read and then discuss in the classroom as a seminar. The practical activities will consist of the selection, adaptation and evaluation of materials, analysis of possible tasks used in the Early Childhood Education classroom and analysis of resources that enhance the use of the foreign language in the classroom.
5. Assessment system
Evaluable activities developed during formal teaching (Modality A):
1. Written test where students demonstrate understanding of theoretical knowledge and skills
the pedagogical tools necessary to analyze and evaluate aspects related to classroom implementation. (40%)
2. Presentation of a digital portfolio containing different activities carried out by the student inside and/or outside the company
classroom that demonstrate their capacity for critical analysis. (30% of the grade)
3. An oral presentation that may consist of either an explanation of a topic related to the contents of the
subject or in the implementation of teaching activities. (30% of the grade)
4. The student must achieve a minimum score of 40% in each of the evaluation activities in order to that can be offset.
Final evaluation activities (Modality B):
Global test with a value of 100% of the final grade.
Requirements to pass the course
In order to pass the course, students must obtain a grade equal to or higher than 50% in the written test.
Global Test and Second Round
The overall test in Modality B and in the second call will be worth 100% of the final grade.
Fifth and Sixth Call
The test coincides with the global test and will be evaluated by the corresponding board.
Finally, it must be taken into account that the Regulations of the Rules of Coexistence of the University of Zaragoza will be applicable to irregularities committed in the evaluation tests through academic fraud, as well as the application of article 30 of the Regulations of the Rules of Evaluation of Learning in relation to irregular practices other than academic fraud.
